Description Greengram (Vigna radiata L) belongs to the family Leguminosae and sub-family Papilionaceae. Greengram contains about 24 per cent protein, this being about two third of the protein content of soybean, twice that of wheat and thrice that of rice. It is grown primarily during kharif season almost in entire India. Multi-stage random sampling technique was employed to select the 180 sample farmers from Gadag district. The result indicated that there was positive but non-significant growth in area and production of green gram (2.51 and 6.03 per cent per annum respectively. Among the different categories of farmers, the total variable cost incurred by small farmers was highest( 18285/ha) as compared to medium ( 17916/ha) and large farmers ( 17411/ha). Among the three categories of farmers, the total cost incurred by the small farmers was highest ( 22889/ha) as compared to medium and large farmers ( 22650/ha and 22268/ha) respectively. The highest yield was obtained by large farmers (6.05q/ha) followed by medium farmers (5.92 q/ha) and small farmers (5.83q/ha). The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was highest in large farmers (1.83) than medium and small farmers (1.76 and 1.72) respectively. Decreasing returns to scale was observed in small farmers (0.93), where as an increasing returns to scale was observed in medium and large farmers (1.05 and 1.03 respectively). The study revealed that most of the resources were over utilized indicated by MVP:MFC ratios and only seed, FYM and human labour were underutilized in overall study area. The marketing analysis revealed that in respect of green gram (whole grain) channel-II was seen efficient, where producers share in consumers rupee was 75.90 per cent, while in case of green gram (split dal) channel-IV was seen efficient, with producers share in consumers rupee 66.89 per cent.
