Description A study was conducted to assess the progesterone
concentration prior and during pubertal
period in Vembur lambs. Blood samples were
collected from the Vembur sheep maintained
in the organized farm (Instructional Livestock
Farm Complex, Veterinary College and
Research Institute, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu) as
well as from farmers flock in its breeding tract
(Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts of
Tamil Nadu, India). The serum progesterone
concentration was performed by Radioimmunoassay.
Serum progesterone level from 40th to 70th
weeks of age ranged from 0.01±0.00 to 17.53 ±
1.33 ng/ml in the ewes in Instructional farm and
0.09±0.03 to 13.50±1.70 ng/ml in the animals of
farmer’s holdings.
