Description Giant African snail is the world's largest and most damaging land snail pest. The Global Invasive Species Database has included it under 100 World Worst invaders. It is non host specific and can consume at least 500 different types of plants and highly adaptive to wide range of environmental conditions. It is capable of modifying its life cycle to suit local conditions and constitute about six per cent of the total species on earth.
Among the five villages surveyed mean snail population was higher in Giriyal, Channapur & Veeralapur and lower in Ramapur & Belagli due to availability of congenial micro-climate especially relative humidity & temperature and presence of perennial horticultural crops for hiding.
Screening of botanical extracts against giant African snail, Achatina fulica revealed superiority of Thevetia peruviana alcohol extract over T. peruviana water extract, tobacco decoction + copper sulphate, sapindus + shikai pod against neonates, juveniles and adult snails both under laboratory and field conditions.
Profenophos 50 EC @ 10ml/l recorded higher ovicidal effect followed by methomyl 40 SP @ 5 g/l, dichlorvos 76 EC @ 10 ml/l and chlorantraniliprole 18.5 WSC @ 1 ml/l. However, metaldehyde 2.5% pellets @ 5 kg/ha recorded higher per cent mortality followed by methomyl 40 SP and dichlorvos 76 EC poison bait against neonates, juveniles and adult snails both under laboratory and field conditions.
Significantly highest pod yield of 21.33 q/ha and BC ratio of 2.26 was produced by T. peruviana alcohol extract and was on par with T. peruviana water extract that recorded yield of 20.33 q/ha and B:C ratio of 2.24. Among different poison baits significantly superior pod yield of 26.60 q/ha and B:C ratio of 2.48 was registered in metaldehyde 2.5 % pellets followed by methomyl 40 SP (24.33 q/ha & 2.32) and dichlorvos 76 EC (21.73 q/ha & 2.29).
