Thethrust ofIndian agriculture inthe postgreen revolution period isanenhancementofagricultural productivitythrough sustainable practices. To achievethisend, one ofthemajor initiativesundertaken by theGovernmentofIndiawastheimplementationofanationallevelproject /programmesforthedevelopmentofraintedareasthroughthewatershed . approach. Exploratory and Descriptive designs reinforced with case analysiswasfollowed. Farmers20innumber(2from each MWS), self— help group members 20 in number (2 from each MWS), committee members30innumber(3fromeachMWS)andofficials40innumber(4 fromeachMWS)wereselectedasrespondents. Pre — tested interview schedule and selected participatory methods were used for the data collection. Statistical methods like frequency,percentagesmean,standarddeviationwereusedtoanalysethe data. Findingsemergedoutfromthestudyindicatedthatmajority ofthefarmers(75%) participated regularlyin individualworks on private property. A greater number of committee members (63.33%) regularly participatedinrestorationofecologicalbalanceandoptimisationofnatural resource use. Highest number of (70%) self — help group members expressedtheirregularparticipationinresourceidentificationandfinalising suitable candidates for thrift loans. Majority of the officials (87.5%) participated regularly in conducting PRA exercise(s), maintenance & verificationofaccounts. The study also depicted that the majority of selected stakeholderspartiallyparticipatedinwatershedmanagement. Case analysis revealed that the selected ten micro watersheds were functioning satisfactorily in Prakasam District scoring (reasonable achievements in Agricultural, Forestry, Engineering and Community Organisation Sectors. Historical perspective on watershed development along with conceptual frame work of micro watershed managementwasalsodealtwith andfinallyarrived atafigurative model andstrategywithrecommendedguidelinesontechnical,human,funding, operation and programme aspects for an effective micro watershed management. . CASanalysiswasappliedforthestakeholders inwatershed managementsoas,totake pragmaticpolicydecisions paves the way for dynamicactionplans. Thestudyconcludedthatadoption of'indigenous technologies,participationandconductingmeetings,trainings,awareness camps maintenance of records & accounts were the major constraints faced by different stakeholders in watershed management followed by alternatives in the form of incentives for people practicing indigenous technologies, trainings on technical work, operation and maintenance of records as well as accounts, about community organisation and teambuilding experiences and disputesolving meetings. And finally the strategies including the timely release of government funds, creating sufficientmarketingfacilitiesand conducting awarenesscamps on micro watershedmanagement. |
