Description Government of' India launched special food production program:r:e
to achieve atleast 175 million tonnes o~ food grain productio~
by the end of Seventh Plan. Special attention was given to
few crops like wheat, rice, maize, bajra, gram and tur.
Andhra Pradesh is one of the States selected for increasing
food production under the scheme. Out or ( 2 3) districts ir:
Andhra Pradesh ( 8) districts were selected for implementir:.g
the Rice Thrust Programme.
Special stress is laid on distribution of location
specific High Yielding Varieties, promoting more fertilizer
use, adoption of need based plai1t protection measures, correction
of zinc deficiency, soil alkalinity, acidity and supply
of implements including power tillers and providing timely
credit.
Since Rice Thrust Programme is under implementation
in Andhra Pradesh from 1988-89, it was felt necessary to
evaluate the implementation of programme in respect of increase
in knowledge of farmers about the improved package of
practices, opinion of the farmers about the programme~
adoption of improved practices by the farmers also
increase obtained in the yields due to implementatio:-.
of' the Rice Thrust Programme. It was also felt necessary
to know the problems in implementation of the performance
and suggestions to overcome the same for the benefit of
planners, administrators, extension workers and farmers
as a feed back. With this background the present study
was formulated.
Ex-post-facto research design was followed in ( 4)
villages of Bhongir mandal viz. Wadaparthy, Anajpur,
Nagireddypally and Nandanam in Nalgonda district. At
random (60) participants and (60) non-participant farmers
were selected. A pre-tested interview schedule was used
for collection of required data. The following findings
emerged out of the study.
Majority of participating fa11mers were old aged,
illiterates, small farmers, source of irrigation being
wells, non social participation category, low mass media
exposure, occassional extension contact, six years of
farming experience, had average planning orientation,
average production orientation and low market orientation.
Majority of non participant farmers were old aged,
illiterates, small farmers, wells as source of irrigation,
non social participant category, low mass media exposure,
non extension contact, having more than 6 years of experence
in farming, low planning orientation, aveage production
orientation and low market orientation.
Majority of participant farmers were from very
high knowledge group whereas non participant farmers were
of low knowledge group.
Majority of participant farmers had highly favoura~e
opinion while non participant farmers had moderately
favourable opinion.

The percentage of increase of yield during two
years of implementation of Rice Thrust Programme in respect
of participating farmers was 20. 95% in kharif 1988 and
20.21 per cent during rabi 1989, whereas it was only 3.471
per cent during kharif 1988 and 3 .171 per cent in rabi
1989 in case of non participating farmers than compared
to base year yield of 1987 which was non significant.
Suggestions offered by the extension agency include
timely supply of quality inputs, credit, training camps
in the villages, advance of tour should be provided etc.
are suggested for effective implementation of Rice Thrust
Programme.
The Rice Thrust Programme has created good impact
on rice growing ยท farmers by increasing their awareness,
knowledge, adoption, yield and income.
