Description |
A sample of 120 adolescent boys in the age group of 16-18 years was randomly selected from 4 schools of rural and urban areas of Ludhiana District, Punjab. The data related to general information, dietary intake, beverage intake, anthropometric profile, physical activity pattern and biochemical profile were collected to analyze their nutritional and health status. The findings revealed that the consumption frequency of soft drinks, energy drinks and alcoholic beverages was higher among urban adolescent boys while consumption frequency of traditional beverages like milk, buttermilk was higher among rural. The percent adequacy of food intake presented a low intake of cereals, pulses, roots and tubers, green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, milk and milk products, fruits and fats among both rural and urban adolescent boys, whereas higher intake of sugar was observed among urban adolescent boys. The data on percent adequacy of nutrient intake revealed that intake of energy, iron, magnesium and fibre was low. The distribution of subjects on basis of Body Mass Index depicted that higher percentages of rural adolescent boys (13 vs 8%) were underweight whereas higher percentage of urban (13 vs 7%) were in overweight category. All the subjects were found to have sedentary lifestyle with mean PAL value of 1.46. Blood glucose and lipid profile of subjects was in normal range. The moderate to high consumption of beverages were found to be positively associated with risk factors of nutritional and health status. Hence there is a need to create awareness regarding selection and consumption of beverages at school level. |
