Description An experiment entitled “Chemical Weed Management in Sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata)” was conducted during kharif 2014 at Post Graduate Research Farm, Agronomy Section, College of Agriculture, Dhule. Experiment consisted of ten treatments laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The treatments consist with weedy check, weed free check, hand weeding (20 and 40 DAS), atrazine (1.50 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE), pendimethalin (1.50 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE), atrazine + pendimethalin (0.75 + 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE), atrazine + 2,4-D (0.75 + 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE), pendimethalin fb atrazine (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1), atrazine fb 2,4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i.ha-1 (PoE) and atrazine fb metsulfuron-methyl (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.004 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE). The different weed control treatment was significantly influenced the weed population, growth and yield of sweet corn. Weed flora (monocot, sedges and dicot), weed intensity and weed dry weight were significantly reduced due to weed free check (T2). Among herbicide treatments sequential application of atrazine fb metsulfuron-methyl (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.004 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T10) recorded less weed flora, weed intensity and weed dry weight which was at par with pendimethalin fb atrazine (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1) (T8), atrazine fb 2,4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T9). Significantly maximum weed control efficiency was recorded under weed free check (T2) followed by atrazine fb metsulfuron-methyl (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.004 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T10). Besides weed free situation, lowest weed index was recorded in atrazine fb metsulfuron-methyl (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.004 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T10). The significantly highest weed index was recorded under weedy check (T1). All the growth parameter of sweet corn viz., plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and total dry matter accumulation plant-1, were significantly higher in weed free check (T1). This was followed by atrazine fb metsulfuronmethyl (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.004 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T10) however it was par with atrazine fb 2, 4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T9), pendimethalin fb atrazine (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T8) and hand weeding (20 and 40 DAS) (T3). The significant effect on growth character of plant was noticed due to different treatments which resulted in enhance yield contributing character viz., number of cob plant-1, length of cob with husk (cm), weight of cob with husk (g), diameter of cob with husk (cm), weight of grain cob-1 (g), number of grains cob-1 and number of grain rows cob-1. The highest green cob and green fodder yield of sweet corn (207.33 q ha-1 and 412.77 q ha-1, respectively) were in weed free check (T2). This was followed by application of atrazine fb metsulfuron-methyl (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.004 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T10) (184.17 and 397.54 q ha-1) and it was found at par with application of atrazine fb 2,4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE (T9) (179.15 q ha-1 and 388.29 q ha-1), pendimethalin fb atrazine (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PE) fb 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 (PoE) (T8) (177.13 q ha-1 and 382.45 q ha-1) and hand weeding (T3) (175.12 q ha-1 and 378.42 q ha-1). The same trend in case of quality and meteorological parameters were observed.
