Description Plants have been one of the important sources of medicines even since the
newlinebeginning of human civilization. More than 35,000 plant species are being used in
newlinevarious human cultures around the world for medicinal purposes. Crude drugs are
newlineusually the dried parts of medicinal plants (roots, stem wood, bark, leaves, flowers,
newlineseeds, fruits and whole plants, etc.) that form the essential raw materials for the
newlineproduction of traditional remedies in various systems of medicines like Ayurveda,
newlineSiddha, Unani, Homeopathy etc.
newlineScaevola taccada Roxb belongs to the family Goodeniaceae and also called as
newlineBhadraksh in Sanskrit and Vella muttangam in Siddha system of medicine. The
newlineliterature survey reveals that various parts of Scaevola taccada Roxb have been used as
newlinea folklore medicine for curing various ailments. The crushed fruit of Scaevola taccada
newlinehas been used by early settlers to treat tinea. The leaves were taken when having
newlineindigestion. They were also used in a poultice to cure headache. In addition there are
newlinealso reports indicating the use of leaf decoction and the flesh of the seeds as a
newlinecontraceptive. The Juice from ripe fruit has been used to treat sores and infected eyes
newlinewhereas a combination of juices from ripe fruit and stem has been used as a remedy for
newlinebites and stings. The plant has also been used as a dermatological aid in Hawaii. A
newlinemixture of pounded root bark with salt is used for cut and skin diseases. In Indonesis the
newlineroot is used as an antidote when poisonous fish and crabs are consumed. But there is no
newlinescientific validation of these claims. This prompted to investigate and validate the
newlinevarious ethnomedicinal claims of this plant.
newlineThus, the present investigation was undertaken to perform the
newlinepharmacognostical, phytochemical and pharmacological studies on Scaevola taccada
newlineRoxb (Goodeniaceae). The coarse powder of leaves of Scaevola taccada Roxb was
newlineextracted with ethanol and water.
