Description Students with Learning Disabilities (LD) have diverse difficulties, often hidden or
newlinesubtle, that affect learning throughout their life. Each LD learner has their own unique set of strengths, weaknesses, interests, experiences and special abilities. These difficulties can be alleviated by providing an appropriate learning environment for them.
newlineWe propose a framework, an Assistive Learning Environment (ASLEN) to enhance the learning experience of LD students in their academic life. Rather than the full
newlineenvironment, we focus on content transformation based on LD learner s requirement. Thus, our proposed framework is capable of recognizing what content has to delivered, variability associated with each LD learner and transformations associated with the content to deliver it to the LD learner. A Student Model is designed which gathers information about the LD student and turns this information into the basis for instructional decisions. A Transformation Model is developed within our framework
newlinewhose objective is to transform the given content in a way acceptable by the specific LD learner. These transformations are a complex process and it has to be done at various levels. At each level, various types of knowledge is required to perform the various transformations recommended by the Transformation Knowledge Base. A content repository is developed where the entire course content is stored with a rich set of annotations. It must be rich enough to capture all the requirements of the LD learner at alphabet level, word level, sentence level and paragraph level. So we have created
newlineASLENML an XML based markup language for this purpose that represents our
newlinecontent repository. A prototype implementation of our framework has been completed and sample interactions are presented. The system allows the user to indicate when transformations and configurations recommended by the system are not appropriate to the user.
