Description The genus Mycobacterium was originated more than 150 million years ago (Hayman, 1984). The modern techniques of molecular genetics and genome sequencing of several strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tuberculosis) opens the pattern of evolution of the mycobacteria. This unwinding is facilitated by the low mutation rate of M. tuberculosis. Research on evolution of M.tuberculosis reveals that the progenitor of this bacterium was present in East Africa as early as 3 million years ago. Now then what about present strains of the M.tuberculosis complex, including the African variants of M.tuberculosis had a common ancestor about 35000-15000 years ago. Modern strains of M.tuberculosis appear to have originated from a common ancestor about 20000-15000 years ago (Gutierrez et. al., 2005; Kapur, 1994). Currently all strains fall into six major clades, all of which are present in East Africa; their global distribution varies, however. Analysis based on the known mutation rate of M.tuberculosis indicates that much of the present diversity among these strains originated between 250- 1000 years ago (Hirsh, 2004).
newlineEast Africa was, then, the ancestral home of both tubercle bacilli and its human hosts. However, tuberculosis in Egypt can be predictable more than 5000 years ago. More recently, M.tuberculosis DNA has been amplified from tissues of Egyptian mummies leaving no doubt as to the cause of early skeletal disease. Written record of Egyptian tuberculosis is limited. Tuberculosis was well established in East Africa by the time
