Description |
The growth of manufacturing is inevitable for improving the living standards of the society particularly in emerging, developing and underdeveloped countries. The industry needs to newlinefocus on making manufacturing more efficient and less polluting through lesser resources newlineconsumption and reduced emissions so that the development is viable, equitable and newlineacceptable. In other words, manufacturing needs to be sustainable. And to make newlinemanufacturing sustainable or to improve sustainability of manufacturing, sustainability assessment is required. To improve manufacturing sustainability, it should be assessed from social, economic, and environmental perspectives in terms of resource consumption newlineand emissions. The assessment should have appropriate indicators and appropriate newlinereporting format so that decision makers can take the informed decisions. newlineThe study aims at developing a manufacturing sustainability assessment framework and newlineits elements. The objectives of the study are to develop appropriate models for the easy, effective and integrated assessment of a manufacturing organization s preparedness to newlineadopt sustainability improvement initiatives for sustainability improvement. The study also aims at identifying appropriate indicators for assessing product sustainability, process newlinesustainability, and sustainability policies across all resources throughout pre newlinemanufacturing, manufacturing and post-manufacturing activities in terms of newlineenvironmental, economic and social indicators. The appropriate indicators are identified newlinefrom literature and tested for an Indian cement industry using an empirical study. 229 questions are identified to assess organizational preparedness for sustainability assessment and improvement. newlineThe study contributes to the existent body of knowledge in the field of manufacturing newlinesustainability, which is still in the nascent state of research, practice and teaching. The newlineiv newline newlineproposed readiness self-assessment model is first such model for assessing preparedness newlineof an organization. T — |
