Description The experiment entitled “Combining ability analysis in bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl.]” was undertaken with the objectives i) combining ability variances and their effects (ii) to estimate heterosis (iii) gene action for yield and yield attributes for planning of an appropriate strategy for development of high yielding bottle gourd hybrid as well as breeding procedure. The materials of experiment consisted of nine diverse parents (Rajendra Chamakar (P1), Pusa Santushti (P2), Pusa Naveen © (P3), Narendra Dharidar (P4), SBBG-23 (P5), SBBG-31-1 (P6), SBBG-32 (P7), HZP-RC-1 (P8), and SBBG-11 (P9) and their 36 F1,s obtained by crossing in diallel fashion were conducted in randomized complete block design in three replications having each experimental unit of single row with spacing of 3m x 0.5m at the Research farm area of the Department of Horticulture ( Vegetable and Floriculture) Bihar Agricultural University, Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour, Bhagalpur during Kharif season, 2013.
Observations were recorded on all the five plants maintained for ten metrical traits viz. days to first pistillate flower anthesis, node number to first pistillate flower anthesis, days to first fruit harvest, vine length(m), vine girth(cm), fruit lenth (cm), fruit girth(cm), no. of fruit per plant, fruit weight(kg) and fruit yield per plant (kg).
Mean square due to genotypes, parents, hybrids and parent vs. hybrids were almost significant for all the characters, except for days to first pistillate flower anthesis and fruit weight (kg) only due to parent vs. hybrids. Crosses Pusa Santushti x Pusa Naveen (21.32), Pusa Naveen x Narendra Dharidar (19.04) and SBBG-31-1 x HZP-RC-1(14.58) were the best heterotic combinations ( F1 ) over standard parent. The estimates of gca and sca variances were significant indicating importance of additive and non additive gene actions for all the traits. Significant gca and sca effects were observed for all the traits which also evidenced close association with per se performance. Pusa Naveen was found as the best combiner for earliness, number of fruits and fruit yield per plant. Additive and non additive gene actions with over mean degree of dominance indicated predominant role of non additive gene action in the inheritance of most of the traits. Asymmetrical distribution of genes showing dominance along with more proportion of dominant genes than recessive one, were detected for all the traits. Thus, heterosis breeding method may be more rewarding for improvement in bottle gourd.
