Description Characterization and evaluation of land resources of watershed was carried out using IRSP6-LISS-III along with the concerned toposheet No. - 72O (Katihar district, survey of India, 1914). The major physiographic units namely, Kosi, its branches and tributaries (1-3 % slope, Aquic Ustipsamments and Aquic Ustifluvents), Mahananda and its tributaries in the east (Typic Endoaquents and Aquic Udifluvents) and the areas affected by Ganga in the south(1-3 % slope, Typic Fluvaquents) were identified. Visual interpretation of satellite data indicated that about 60 % of the total geographical area is under cultivation followed by waterlogged, ox-bows and scrubs. Six soil series were tentatively identified. The soils affected by Kosi river were shallow to moderately deep (125 cm), slightly acidic to neutral, light to medium textured on the surface and followed by light textured sub-soils with gleyed spots on ped faces, moderately to highly suitable for maize, chillies, oil seeds, jute and pine apples and highly suitable for stripped gourd, bottle gourd etc near the river a, where as soils of Mahananda river basin were deep, slightly acidic, moist, medium to heavy textured, high water table are suitable for summer paddy and Ganga diara soils were very deep, heavy textured and alkaline in reaction and are moderately suitable for paddy, jute, oil-seeds and vegetables with high moisture retention capacity. On the basis of laboratory data, soil fertility assessment in respect to available macro and micro nutrients have been drawn interms of nutrient indexing (Low, medium and high) and mapped all these natural resources with the RS and GIS techniques. The available macronutrients were low to medium in their status and available micro-nutrients were sufficient in their status. On the basis of reconnaissance soil survey, Gola-Pachgachhia, Bhatgaon-Balrampur, Khamber-Pachgachhia and Nohri-Khamber Soil Association map of the district has been developed. An action plan has also been prepared with suggested land use and appropriate interventions which might help in better management of land resources for sustained productivity.
