Results of the XII class examination is very important for the adolescents as this is the main determining criteria for future admission to a high quality education for a successful career. This makes the academic performance of adolescents the greatest issue and challenge for them. The study attempts to find out the role of parents in the academic performance of adolescents. The focus of the study is adolescents who are studying in various XII schools in Kerala. The interview schedule for collecting their personal profile and academic performance and the parenting scale of Bhardwaj et al. (1998) was used as research tools.. The result of annual examination of XI class was used to analyze the academic performance of the respondents. The theoretical framework of the study was derived from Erikson s psychosocial theory of personality, cultural reproduction theory of Bourdieu, the social capital theory of Coleman and parenting style of Baumrind. The analysis of the study reveals that the academic performance of adolescents .is influenced by the parenting style. The cultural capital, human capital and social capital influences the parenting style which in turn affect the academic performance of adolescents The high parenting style of the Kerala nuclear family is found to enhance the academic performance of adolescents newline Bibliography p.i-xxiv, Appendices p. xxv-xxxii |
