Summary, etc. The genus Embelia tsjeriam-cottam A.DC. belongs to family Myrsinaceae. The synonyms of this species is Embelia basaal, Embelia robusta Malabar. It is a shrub in nature. Global distribution of this species is recorded in India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. In India, it is seen in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, some part of Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. It is widely used in Ayurveda, Unani and Folk medicine. The plant possess several bioactive compounds which are used as medicine in anthelmintic, antispasmodic and carminative activity. The plant contains Embelin, a benzoquinone and gallic acid 2, a polyphenol. Both the compounds are reported as antioxidant and anticancer properties. High performance liquid chromatography is now used for quantitative determination of bioactive compound which helps for the identification of quality germplasm. Due to over exploitation in herbal medicine preparation the natural population of this species is declining day by day and today the species is reported to be as rare category. The seed germination percent under control condition is reported to be 13.2%. Other propagation methods of this species have not been reported so far. Therefore, it is an urgent need to develop a suitable propagation technology for the conservation and multiplication of this species. In this paper quantitative determination of bioactive compound Embelin has been evaluated through High Performance Liquid Chromatography for the identification of quality germplasm of this species. The identified quality planting material was subjected to their in vitro multiplication for the production of their clones. It was found that the germplasm which were collected from Borivali forest area, Maharashtra conation optimum 4.88% Embelin. The identified germplams were multiplied through in vitro propagation from nodal segments. Optimum morphogenetic response in terms of shoot multiplication was achieved when the MS culture medium was supplemented with BAP 3.0mg/t + IAA 1.0mg/lt. On an average 22 green and healthy shoots with 6.16cm length were induced. After shoot multiplication the in vitro regenerated shoots were shifted in mist chamber under high humid condition for ex vitro rooting. IBA 100ppm solution for 10 minute, showed excellent rooting response within 20 days. After rooting, the plants were shifted in green house for acclimatization and hardening with more than 74% plant recoveries.
