Abstract Chitin prepared from prawn shell was mixed with commercial broiler diet at 0.5% level and fed to 500 one day chicks (Cobb broiler) for a period of 60 days. Simultaneously two other batches of 500 birds were fed with commercial diet at control. Representative birds were weighed on the 25th day and subsequently at an interval of 7 days till the 60th day. on the 25th day it was observed that the weight gain in the birds fed on chitin diet was significantly higher than that in the birds fed on commercial diet only. This trend continued till the 60th day causing an ultimate 10% weight gain over the birds fed on commercial diet. There was an increase of 5% feed intake by the birds fed on chitin diet showing better appetite. The feed efficiency ratio was shifted from 2.5 to 2.38 due to incorporation of chitin in the feed.
