Abstract Govt. of Kerala imposed a ban on trawling for shrimps during monsoon season to reslrie1 biological overfishing particularly in lhe breeding season so a to eOS\lre high enough requits into the fishery. Animal life in estuaries, coastal waters, " !Closed seas and ocean faces threat of over-e: :ploitation o commercial speciĀ¢5, physical alteration of eco-systems, pollution and changes in the atmospheric conditions. Over fishing. particularly with non <eleelive bottom trawling. scouring continental shelf sea bed, disrupts marine eco-systems, leading to a fum call for decisive action to put an end the destruction of marine life. In the interest of conservation of coastal fish stock, the Kerala Govt's action to ban trawling during the months of June, July& August, coinciding with the breeding period of the predominant species of fish caught in the coastal belt, is a worthwhile measure. As a result of the introduction of a ban in monsoon trawling. many changes in the design and operation aspects of fishing gear both in traditional and mechanized sectors have come into being. This eommunic..l,ion elaborates those changes in a s tematic approach.
