Abstract The bivalve, Meretrix costa (Cheminitz), when maintained in sea water containing various concentrations of copper, was found to take up large amounts of the metal; a linear relation between rate of uptake and copper (II) concentration was observed. Gill tissues form the major site of accumulation, Mortality was comparatively Iow, even in 10 ppm solutions.
