Abstract | Lobsters are considered as "the live gold of sea" because ofhigh demand for them from countries like USA, Japan, France,Canada,Singapore and Malaysia.During 1 995-96, 590 tonnes of lobsters were landed from Gujaratwaters, which formed aboutO.I% of total marine fish catch of Gujarat State. Lobster landings in thestate have been declining since 1991-92. I n this year lobster catch was 1141 tonnes (Table). This may be attributed to the exploitation ofjuveniles and berried females. It has been observed that about 40% of the lobster catch comprised juvenilesand berried females. The adult lobsters are sold to the processi ng plants in live cond ition and the juveniles are sold in the local market at very low prices. |
