Abstract The economic importance of sea urchin (phylum Echinodermata; class Echinoidea) has so far been confined to its use as bait in sea fishing, its shell as a decorative cutio, its spines for writing on slates. It has rarely been used for eating. But the possibilities of large scale export of sea urchin roe (gonads) for realising valuable of foreign exchange have now opened up and the outlook appers to be very bright.
