Abstract A major part of the catch of silver bellies landed at Kakinada is now being converted for use as poultry feed. Silver bellies can, however, be consumed by humans and not diverted for conversion into poultry feed. An attempt has therefore been made to enhance the utility of these small fishes as human food. Fresh silver bellies, degutted and sun-dried on a platform, have been accepted by local fish consumers for preparation of curry, fried chips, etc, the authors say. Sal-cured silver bellies have also found acceptance of fish eaters, according to them. A longer shelf life of six months sun-dried or cured silver bellies is added advantage, it has been pointed out. Fish powder prepared from degutted silver bellies have also been preffered by local people for preparing curry and wafers, it is mentioned in the article. Fresh silver bellies preserved in ice keep well for five days, it is stated.
