Abstract Isolation of C. botulinum type D from marine fish and sediment samples positive for type D toxin was attempted. Toxigenic strains of C. botulinum type D were isolated from all the 18 samples with preheating at 80°C for 10 min. and from 2 samples, without heating. The recovery of C. botulinum type D without preheating treatment is very poor. Of
the 18 strains of toxigenic C. botulinum type D isolated, 4 strains possessed highest toxin titers of 10000 MLD/ml. C. botulinum type D toxin showed no activation by trypsin. The study indicates that a preheating treatment is required for the rapid isolation of toxigenic C.botulinum type D.
