Abstract The states of Andhra Pradesh and Tarnil Nadu are grouped as
southeast coast of India. In the last four decades since 1961, the annual
rate of growth in production in this region is gradually declining (Srinath,
2003). On the east coast of India, major stocks are intensively exploited
and declining trend in shrimp production has been reported in this region.
In order to manage the fishery in a given area, a thorough knowledge
on the species composition is very essential. There is an urgent need
to implement management measures to sustain the coastal demersal
resources considering their large-scale exploitation. Finfish resources form
the dominant component in the trawl bycatch where shrimps are targeted.
In this paper, an attempt is made to study catch composition of trawlcaught
finfish resources in the coastal waters off Visakhapatnam and deep
seas, which may facilitate the appropriate re-distribution of ever-increasing
fishing effort in all strata of the continental shelf and reduce the fishing
pressure in the coastal waters.
