Abstract Traditionally, southwest monsoon acted as a natural closed season for the fishery at a time when the mean size of almost all the species in the fishery is at the lowest. The stormy weather conditions during the monsoon season naturally stalled fishing activities at those times when technology was primitive and human energy was the only source of energy. However, the mechanization programme toppled this natural closure of fishing activities, as the mechanized crafts are capable of braving normal stormy weather conditions. The details of the same are discussed in this paper.
