Abstract Feeds containing residual groundnut oil, coconut oil, mustard oil and sardine oil as sources of fat (up to 2.1-7.2% fat in feed) were fed to Tilapia fish over 6 months, and the visceral and body fats were studied. Coconut oil induced max. deposition of saturated fatty acids and lower fatty acids (C6, C8, C10, C12, C14) in the viscera and body fat. Mustard oil induced the max. deposition of polyunsaturated fatty acids, followed by sardine oil. Deposition of C22:1 acid in body fat as well as viscera was very significant in fish fed mustard oil. It is concluded that dietary fatty acid pattern has a significant effect on the fatty acid composition of the fish.
