Abstract | Whale shark is found in tropical and warm temperate seas all over the globe. It is greyish in colour with a unique checkerboard pattern of light spots and with horizontal and vertical stripes. It has a broad flat head, truncated snout and very big terminal mouth. It is the largest fish known to man. Whale shark is generally encountered close to or at the surface, either alone or in schools. It is a filter feeder and feeds on tiny planktonic organisms. The whale shark has several thousands ofteeth in 11 to 12 rows in its jaws, but each tooth is only 3 mm in length. |
