Abstract | The marine fish oil sardine (Sardinella longiceps) is a rich source of oil, the estimated availability of oil at the current level of catch being about 6000 tonnes per annum. The main Impediment for the commercial utilization of sardine oil is its objectionable odour. The possibility of preparing surface coating materials from the oil has been investigated. It has been found that the stearine separated oil on heat-bodying at 200'C. in the presence of cobalt oxide catalyst (I per cent on the wt of oil) for 2 hr, resembles double-boiled linseed oil in its drying characteristics; in addition the objectionable odour gets removed. The paint formulations prepared using this oil conform to the Indian Standards Specifications for ready mixed paints. |
