Abstract The most important fishing method in termsof the quantity of fish being landed in India is rrawling. Trawlingtakesaway a goodshare ofthe profit towards running expenditure. More over, lot of time and fuel gets wasted for the reason that in most of the cases the nature and distribution of the target fish is unknown. Every yeara largenumber of newtrawlers are being introduced into the fleet and as a result the catch per effort is declining steadily which can be again correlated to the over-exploitati ion of the demersal fishery resources. Urgent attention has to be thereforegiven forthediversification of fishing methods and greater emphasis needs to be given for pelagic fishing. To make the operat ions more viable, new technologies like FADs, (Fish Aggregating Devices) can be adopted.
