Abstract Results of the experiments conducted with 50 and 60 mm separator panels, attached to 15 m bulged belly shrimp trawl and rigged with 1140 x 570 mm rectangular flat otter boards towards development of a selective trawl with sorting device are discussed. Fishing operation carried out off Mormugao from a 10.97 m OAL vessel powered with 82 hp engine indicated that the shrimp codend caught significantly higher (P<0.01) target species compared to the fish codend and there was significant different observed in the case of total catch in the two codends. There was no significant difference in catch between hauls made with 50 and 60 mm separator panel in the case of shrimp, fish and total catch. The shrimps caught were of higher quality in the selective trawl and beneficial implication include extension of active fishing time without adversely affecting the gear performance and helping in saving labour in sorting out trawl catch.
