Abstract One of the most significant achievements of Independent India has been her emergence as one of the Major Fishing. Fish Processing and Exporting Nations of the World. With an average annual fish landing of 2.4 million metric tonnes, she now occupie the seventh position in this respect, surpassed by Japan, USSR, China, USA, Chile, Peru in their order. Regarding catches of the most valued commodity among the seafoods viz; Prawn/Shrimp. India has been topping the list at least during the past decade with the landings touching a figure of 2.5 lakh tonnes in the year 1980. With export earnings from processed seafoods of the country reaching an all time high record of Rs. 342.2 crores in 1982, fishes now contribute Rs. 750 crores annually to the gross domestic produce.
