It is estimated that half of the people living in the Third World do not have access to clean water and that 80 % of all diseases can be attributed to such lack of clean water and poor sanitary conditions. In most cases, clean water exists locally, but it is not accessible to those who need it. Pumping is expensive and requires installations whose operation and maintenance demands technical skills that are not always available at the village level. A simple and inexpensive system has just been invented by two Belgian development workers, Claude Feremans and Claude Brasseur. It consists of four elements: a pneumatic pump that compresses air, a container of about 10 litres (2.2 gallons) capacity submerged in the well, a small flexible tube to supply the compressed air and another flexible tube to supply the pumped water. The submerged container fills up rapidly, the water then gushes out of the tube and runs for about 50 seconds. The system weighs about 20 kg (44 pounds) can be installed in 15 minutes, is easily maintained and ensures good sanitary and safety conditions because the wells can be covered over. It is also easily adaptable to windmills as the power required is very small: a child of 5 years can operate the pump.
