The French BRGM (1) is producing a map summarising the water resources of West and Central Africa, in order to improve the management of water projects at village level and also to improve agricultural development. This project is being conducted at the request of the Inter-African Committee of Hydraulic Research at Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso (Comite interafricain d'etudes hydrauliaues). With a rapidly increasing number of water improvement schemes, a system of mapping is needed in order to visualise and pinpoint on a regular basis all geological, hydro-ecological, climatological, technical and economic data. BRGM's computeraided mapping system will make this goal possible. Initially, a 1: 5,000,000 six-colour map will be drawn up and published in English and French. It will serve as a memorandum of water problems for the entire region, with detailed captions and relevant economic data. In a second phase, more detailed country-by-country and largerscale studies will be carried out, on the basis of this first mapping and they will give a global view, overriding political boundaries. This project concerns all the Central and West African countries, with the exception of Zaire. It will also be possible to extend it to all of subSaharan Africa.
