Description A post-graduate course in 'applied remote sensing' at Silsoe College in Bedfordshire, England, is using aerial photography and information relayed by satellite to teach Third World students how to interpret data on early warning signs of drought, erosion and crop disease. Remote sensing is being used successfully to plot moisture and vegetation in drought areas of Africa by national institutions in these regions and researchers of Silsoe College. This type of information is also used to chart areas for which good maps are not available.

The course is being offered to developing country students in response to the growing need for trained specialists to help dryland nations make better use of their scarce natural resources.
