CTA organized a seminar, jointly with CEASM and TDRI, on the improvement of fish products (preservation and processing) and the development of small-scale fishing in West-Africa which took place in Dakar from November 3 to 21. The seminar was attended by technical experts from fisheries departments representing fifteen countries: Benin, Burkina Faso Cape Verde, Cote d'lvoire, Gambia Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo. This seminar, mainly oriented towards training aspects, came to a series of conclusions and recommendations pertaining to problems of preservation and processing techniques of fresh and frozen fish. The conclusions also considered problems of inter-regional trade, extension,training, documentation, research collaboration as well as the setting up of a regional programme. A working paper had been previously prepared by CEASM and TDRI. Copies of this study and of other documents presented at the occasion of this seminar are available from CTA. It was agreed, given the nature of the proposals interesting all parties, to organize another CTA sponsored meeting in Banjul, mid 1987. The audience of this particular meeting should include professional staff from fisheries departments decision-makers, planners of all the countries concerned as well as representatives of the main funding institutions so as to identify a regional programme. In accordance with this, CTA has undertaken the translation of a TDRI publication on fish handling, preservation and processing in the Tropics. This publication is available in French.
