Description |
Rain forests still account for about 40 % of the world's tropical land area. They are vitally important ecosystems and provide many biological resources for mankind; but they are increasingly threatened by human activities some motivated by a desperate search for food and land others by a desire for commercial gain. One estimate of the rate of deforestation in these zones says 14 hectares of tropical forest disappear every minute. The Dutch Government, in response to these problems, has set up a programme for the stimulation of forestry research in the humid tropics called TRQPENBOS. Its aim is to develop and disseminate information needed to combat deforestation and to promote a wiser use of rain forest resources. In its initial fouryear phase the programme will receive financial and technical support from the Dutch Government. TROPENBOS held its first international consultation at Tiel in the Netherlands. This was attended by some 60 participants from research institutes in EEC countries, tropical countries and international organizations. It was decided that research will be conducted in the tropics by national research institutions which will be coordinated by TROPENBOS. An extensive communication network will be established and CTA will assist TROPENBOS in circulating information on tropical forests.
