Description |
International laboratory work on soil samples has been severely hampered by the great variability in standardization of data provided and exchanged. Some years ago, the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC) at Wageningen in the Netherlands started an international soil sample exchange programme. Difficulties soon became apparent when attempts were made to classify soils and correlate data. As a result, the Laboratory Methods and Data Exchange Programme (LABEX) was set up to conduct laboratory cross-checking and to look into ways of standardizing analytical procedures. Soil laboratories immediately showed considerable interest in the programme and there are now nearly 90 participants, 28 of them from ACP countries. Sample exchanges conducted so far confirm the urgent need to harmonize soil data A workshop was held in the last week of August 1986, when about 60 participants discussed the results of LABEX. They agreed that the programme should continue, since it provides a valuable external reference point for their own work. Much interest was also expressed in widening the programme from classification to the assessment of the fertility of soils. An account of the workshop discussions is in preparation and the next stage of the LABEX programme is being prepared. There are also plans to publish a newsletter through which soil laboratories will be able to exchange information.
