Description Information transfer cannot be limited to the printed word: audio-visual techniques are also an important tool, especially for extension workers involved primarily with illiterate farmers. CTA has therefore decided to participate in a video production programme dealing with, three development projects in Niger undertaken by 'Veterinaires sans Frontieres'.

One of these projects deals with the use of draught animals for drawing water in Air, in the Agades region, where about 1,400 animals are used to irrigate market gardens. Another deals with re-building and maintaining draught animal herds in the Niger Valley in order to promote irrigated crops of rice. maize. sorghum and wheat.

The third project is designed to help develop family-based poultry farming in the Maradi region through the implementation of vaccination programmes, including the training of vaccination technicians. The goal is to eradicate 'Newcastle disease' which is responsible for 80 % of losses.

The video programme includes three technical films of about 15 minutes each, a 13 minute film for general distribution in French and English, and a television spot, all produced on Betacam/BVU videotape. The general film is designed for use on television, in schools, at conferences and other meetings and is available for NGOs and international organizations. The technical films are designed for training professionals and are also available to NGOs and international aid organizations, particularly those working in developing countries faced with similar problems.
