Description |
A factory to manufacture pourghere soap is currently being built on Santiago Island in Cape Verde. It is designed to produce 50 tonnes of soap per year using pourghere oil. This shrub, commonly used in reforestation programmes (6,000 seedlings this year), produces an oil that can not only be used to make soap but also to fuel diesel engines. Pressing equipment similar to that used in Cameroon for extracting palm oil, will be used to extract the oil, part of which will provide the energy needs of the factory. The project promoters, the Cape Verde National Institute of Cooperatives and the French Technological Institute for Supporting Co-development, plan to install several other units over the years to come in order to supply national soap needs. Similar initiatives are being planned for Guinea and Guadeloupe.
