Animal breeding, pasture development and foraging in developing countries tended to be overlooked by agricultural researchers for many years. Over the last decade, however, the importance of pasturing has been acknowledged and initial steps have been taken to promote its development. An information and exchange network bringing together scientists and agricultural development managers has been one of the first results. PANESA was born in Africa at a workshop on pasture research held in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1984. The Pasture Network for Eastern and Southern Africa is the first forma network in Africa devoted to pasture and fodder research and development. Pasture is defined as encompassing natural pasture, planted grasses, legumes, browse and fodder as well as crop residues. The network is intended to improve effectiveness in pasture research in participating countries and to promote the application of improved technology by farmers and herders. PANESA is open to all interested parties ranging from farmers to researchers and has already attracted member! from the following countries Angola, Botswana, Burundi Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Le sotho, Madagascar, Malawi Mozambique, Rwanda, Soma lie, Swaziland, Sudan, Tanza nia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A major part o the network's activities is the.
