Description |
An anti-desertification programme has just been launched by the government of Mauritania. It will include the installation of windpumps for irrigation and the watering of animals as well as the development of a cultivation zone protected by a windbreak curtain formed by trees. This ambitious green belt programme for the city of Nouakchott will be deployed to extract groundwater. The objective is to provide water for an area of palm trees linking villages around the capital to hold back the advance of the Sahara desert and Sahelian arid lands. The 1,000 ha green belt will be divided into 125 plots of 8 ha each, which will be provided with two windpump boreholes and planted with 2,000 palm trees. Parcels of land protected in this way will be used for vegetable production for the nearby urban population.
