Description The International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) has been involved since 1984 in the preparation of an inventory of such resources in the Sahel in collaboration with national institutes in the ten countries concerned. The first objective was to catalogue, describe and collect samples of wild species similar to cultivated crops (e.g., millet, sorghum and rice), local varieties of food plants, forage plants and other species important to the economy. These measures were long overdue because local plant diversity and thus genetic variability has been dwindling for over 50 years and this decline has accelerated over the last 15 years. Native species, however, are well adapted to local conditions and are thus of considerable value for re-introducing crops that do not need expensive inputs to produce. Such a detailed inventory of wild plants and their habitat is also a stimulus to observing and predicting ecological change.
