Description |
According to a new report from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), proven low-cost, self-help methods can help boost food production and save eroding soils in Africa. The author of 'The Greening of Africa' visited some of the most successful development projects across the continent and noted that such breakthroughs have several points in common: they are low-cost, high profit, low-risk ventures relying primarily on local resources and skills. Among the projects described are simple anti-erosion techniques that have increased crop yields by 50 % in some villages in Burkina Faso and new varieties of cassava in Nigeria that increase yield while reducing labour require meets.
