Description A workshop on the planning and management of agricultural research in the South Pacific was held at the Alafua Campus of the University of South Pacific in Western Samoa from 5 to 16 October 1987. It was jointly organized by IRETA and ISNAR and sponsored by CTA, the Asian Development Bank and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. It was attended by directors of agriculture from all Island States of the South Pacific.

The workshop addressed the problem of agricultural research which is often constrained by a shortage of experienced managers, weak institutional infrastructure, inadequate management procedures, lack of proper prioritization in the face of competing objectives, and weak mechanisms for exchanging information and technology.

Discussions on topics such as 'what is special about agricultural research management' 'human resources planning and management', 'the logical framework approach to management', 'accessing world scientific knowledge', communication and leadership, were complemented by many case studies.

Encouraged by the success of this workshop, ISNAR is now considering organizing similar events in other regions.
