Description |
Peruvian scientists are studying the possibility of using as forage parts of the cassava plant that are usually discarded when the roots are harvested. Faced with a food production imbalance as the population exceeds the capacity of the land to sustain it, the scientists are looking at various ways of both improving productivity and making better use of what is grown. The work involves studying the viability of cassava foliage as animal feed, particularly for cattle in the tropical areas where cassava is traditionally grown. The researchers believe that they have found a way of overcoming the toxicity of fresh cassava leaves, which results from the presence of hydrocyanic acid, and have also compared the nutritional value of the leaves with that of alfalfa.
