Description |
Water hyacinth can be made into a palatable cattle feed if ensiled with paddy straw, molasses and urea. Trials at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute have shown that such silage can meet the protein requirements of animals but more energy needs to be supplemented. The mix for the silage is made up with 65 parts of chaffed water hyacinth, 24 parts of chaffed paddy straw, 10 parts molasses and 1 part urea. After mixing, the material is ensiled for six months. Analysis shows digestible crude protein at 8.3% and dry matter at 23% In feeding trials, calves were fed the silage ad lib. for 21 days. It was readily eaten, and the animals remained apparently normal. Results at the end of the trials showed that the silage provided sufficient protein but only about 40% of the animal's energy requirements. For more details, contact: Dr O.
