Description A paper industry in a Sahelian country menaced by drought and desertification seems inconceivable but Mali has a 'paper workshop' where engineers are experimenting with paper-making from alternative raw materials including cotton stalks.

Cotton is Mali's largest export and the stalks, previously considered crop residue fit only for burning and ploughing into the soil, could represent additional income for producers: each year farmers are faced with disposing of 200,000 tonnes of cotton stalks.

Furthermore, the manufacture of paper from cotton stalks requires very little water and causes hardly any pollution. The process is semi-mechanized: the basic equipment is a hydraulic press, which may be accompanied by a shredder, a digester and a grinder, while crushing and pressing can be done manually.

Located in Bamako, the paper workshop will initially be used for demonstration, producing 50 tonnes of paper a year. The experiment will be used as an incentive to develop small decentralized paper manufacturing units.
