Wetlands and shallow water lakes are among the most productive ecosystems and some shallow lakes can yield far more useful biomass, particularly animal protein, than the equivalent area of crop or range land. African wetlands and shallow water bodies provides a summary of the latest data on the geographical environment, physicochemical parameters and biology of the major shallow aquatic ecosystems: lakes, swamps, floodplains, coastal lagoons and permanent or temporary pans. Marine, estuarine and mangrove areas have The authors are 33 research workers from 11 countries and all have first-hand experience of their specialization. They have collated information from many and scattered sources to provide a reference book which will be a basis for future research and an invaluable aid to governments and international aid agencies concerned with the management and conservation of these valuable and resource rich ecosystems.
