Description |
Longmans Scientific and Technical Books have published a new title in their Tropical Agriculture series. Coffee by Gordon Wrigley, is billed as the first truly comprehensive treatment of coffee in over 50 years, covering all aspects of the crop in detail, from cultivation and nutrition to preparation and marketing. Its aim is to provide a practical guide for all those involved in coffee; from commercial growers, consultants, processors, packers and dealers, to research and extension workers. Coffee, which originated in Ethiopia, is now grown in more than 80 countries in four continents, and is today the second most important commodity in the world trade after oil. Besides providing the basic income for around 20 million workers in coffee-producing areas, for many countries it is the major and critical source of foreign exchange; in consuming countries, it provides both work and pleasure. Gordon Wrigley's book covers all aspects of the crop, including its legends and history as a beverage from the end of the 14th century through to the present day. Original botanical drawings of the three main species are reproduced. The text also covers the botany of the crop, as well as the pests and economically important diseases that may attack it. Wrigley includes a full description of the coffees from each of the producing countries, plus a guide as to how they should be prepared for maximum enjoyment. The book is illustrated throughout in both colour and black and white; there are many tables to support the text.
