The Tropical Weeds Unit at Lone Ashton, Bristol, UK, is part of the Weed Biology and Management Group of the Institute's weed Research Department. The Unit's objective IS to improve the management of weeds in developing countries - by supporting local projects, research and experimentation, teaching, project appraisals, weed surveys and advisory visits. The Unit's activities include the EEC-funded Project for Improved Weed Management in Developing Countries, a joint venture with CIRAD (International Cooperation Centre of Aericultural Research for Development) at Montpellier France. One of the most Important roles of this project has been to provide advice and information on tropical weeds and their control to organizations and individuals in developing countries. The Weed Research department is one of the few Impartial advice centres for these countries, many of which lack trained weed specialists or the information needed to conduct weed research and management Advice is given in many different ways by letter, visits to countries, searching data banks and publishing reports, reviews, leaflets, newsletters and books. Requests for advice, information, and literature have come, from 28 developing countries many of which are ACP states. Subjects cover a wide range and have included control of weeds in crops (for example, cloves and onions), availability of herbicides and application equipment, sources of literature on weed control, biology of Imperata cylindrica, control of specific weeds and safe use of herbicides The DIALOG data bank in California is used to prepare bibliographies for individuals in Third World countries. These consist of abstracted infrornation from journals such as Weed Abstracts. They are valuable sources of reference to individuals who have limited access to weed literature, or who do not have the time to peruse the many publications containing information on weeds The project prepares review articles on specific topics and books. was published by FAO in 1987, and A.K. Wilson prepared a chapter on weeds and their control m opinions for , published by the Tropical Development and Research Institute (London) in 1986. The tropical Weeds Unit support their French colleagues by giving detailed informaton on the identificahon, biology, and control of selected tropical weeds. More leaflets are being produced, covering all major weeds of developing countries. Tropical Weeds News is a newsletter, produced by the Unit; which is distributed to about 800 individuals and organizations throughout the world. Its purpose is to inform people of new developments related to tropical weed science. A French edihon is planned. Work has been done on creating an expert system on weed control for Kenya. The concept of this system IS that non-specialists, by answering a series of simple queshons about crops weeds and stages of growth, are given advice on appropriate methods of control. Many individuals interested in tropical weed control visit the Tropical Weeds Unit to consult the staff, to collect information, and to use the Long Ashton Research Station Library.
