Description |
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) was established in 1977 as one of 13 centres supported by CGIAR (the ConsuItative Group on International Agricultural research), which is a consortium of donor governments and agencies. The CGIAR seeks to enhance and sustain food production and to improve social and economic conditions for people living in developing countries. ICARDA was specifically set up to address the problems of countries in North Africa and West Asia where there are dry summers and where precipitation in winter ranges from 200 to 600m. ICARDA has also been given a world responsibility for the improvement of barley, lentil and faba bean, and a regional responsibility for the improvement of wheat, chickpea and vasture and forage crops. And ICARDA runs an important programme on farm resource management. The results of ICARDA's research are transferred through cooperation with national and regional research institutions, with universities and ministries of agriculture, and through the technical assistance and training that ICARDA provides. A range of training programmes is offered extending from residential courses for groups to advanced research opportunities for individuals. These efforts are reinforced by seminars, by publications (research reports training materials and manuals for the application of techniques) and by specialized information services operating in close association with ICARDA's senior scientists. In 1987 ICARDA information services staff (library, wordprocessing and typesetting functions, and printshop) all came together under one roof in Tel Hadya, Syria, thus facilitating the production of ICARDA'-s specialized information services. These are: FABIS, a biannual newsletter on the faba bean, which publishes up to-the-minute short scientific papers in English and Arabic on the latest research results and news items RACHIS, a newsletter about barley, wheat and triticale aimed at cereals researchers in the Near East, North Africa and Mediterranean environments, which reports results, achievements, and new ideas; and LENS, providing information on lentils. ICARDA also aims to strengthen cooperation with national centres participating in AGRIS. For example, the AGRIS resources were recently exploited by the production of a new bibliographic service 'Faba Bean in AGRIS', which is computerproduced by FAO, and printed and distributed by ICARDA. Other publications produced by ICARDA include: ICARDA Investing in the Future, an outline in English and Arabic of ICARDA's historical background and research objectives; 'Opportunities for Training and PostGraduate Research by ICARDA'; ICARDA having active training courses on the development and improvement of food legumes cereals, and forages with its own research scientists and trained instructors; 'Opportunities for Field Research at ICARDA' - a brochure intended for prospective MSc candidates within the ICARDA region. And finally, 'Checklist of Journal Articles 1978-87' was compiled to bring to the attention of the scientific community, and consists of references of articles by ICARDA research scientists submitted to refereed scientific journals from 1978. Each reference includes year of publication, author, primary title, volume number, issue number, pagination, language code of the article and/or summary when necessary, together with an AGRIS reference number. ICARDA is participating in two major efforts that call for joint achon by the CGIAR centres. One, known as the Preservahon Project, is managed by the CGIAR secretariat in Washington, and it is recording all the publications of all the centres on compact discs with the indexing necessary for precise retrieval. The other is managed by ICRISAT in India and aims at constructing a composite list of the journals held by the libraries in all the centres. This will permit not only improved service to developing countries, but also more cooperation among the centres.
